This year’s Maldon in Winter program is a 17-day celebration of creativity, music, and the unique historic charm that Maldon has to offer.
Famous for being Australia's first notable town, Maldon comes to life in the winter with a variety of exciting things to do, see and experience.
Clif Edwards is the coordinator of Maldon Inc a not-for-profit community organisation that promotes the town.
“The Maldon in Winter program is a wonderful way to showcase our beautiful historic town and everything it has to offer during the colder months, Clif said.
“This year’s theme is The HEAT Is On, and the centrepiece of our program is the inaugural Goldfields Gothic - Festival of Dark Ideas.”
“While music is our focus, we have something for everybody, including film screenings, exhibition openings, markets, a community bonfire, and fairy-lit shop windows.
“Join us to experience a fun and festive atmosphere this winter.”
The Maldon in Winter program is known for showcasing a variety of music. This year award-winning classical guitarist, Clancy McLeod will open the Festival with Bach and beyond. Nostalgia will follow with a Neil Diamond tribute and favourite hits of the ‘60s.
The town will delve into the darker side of life with the Goldfields Gothic Festival of Dark Ideas. Running from July 1-3, this event offers a number of enticing events to enliven your stay or visit.
Pack a picnic and admire the superb fashions synonymous with Australia’s one-and-only Gothic and Victorian Picnic. Enjoy performances by legendary dark alternative band IKON or ethereal electro-folk band Dandelion Wine. Savour the sassy and seductive moves of Phoenix Burlesque troupe. Visit Edge Gallery, a centre for leading-edge photographic artists, to experience the spine-tingling exhibition Shroud.
For the kids, there’s fun, hands-on activities including croquet or drawing the gothic, as well as a talk by writer and artist Dillon Naylor.
The Goldfields Gothic Festival wouldn’t be complete without ghost tours of the Maldon cemetery, and if you love cars come and check out the Hearse Showcase. There are a number of other exciting talks and events on offer encompassing dark art, literature, floristry, fashion, and more.
While you’re in town why not sample Maldon’s culinary offerings, which range from prizewinning scones with jam and cream to French cuisine and genuine pub meals? Many of the town’s establishments are equipped with log fires, making them a true delight on a chilly winter’s day or night.
For complete immersion in Maldon’s winter wonderland there is a wealth of accommodation choices available, from historic miner’s cottages to studios and luxury dwellings.
