For something a little different this spring, maybe plan a trip to the Maryborough Harness Racing Club (MHRC) for a day of fun, excitement and old-fashioned home-style cooking.
In 1945 a trust was appointed and the track became a premium regional trotting track, hosting champion horses from throughout Australia and overseas.
Les Chapman has been involved with harness racing for more than 60 years. He has trained, driven and part-owned horses, and is currently the secretary of the MHRC. He said the venue has undergone a few changes since it was first built in 1891 as a thoroughbred racing track.
“Victoria is known as the leading state for trotters in Australia,” Les said.
“And within the harness racing industry, Maryborough – and the Redwood Carnival in particular – is known for setting the standard.”
The high calibre of competition is reflected in the racing complex at Carisbrook, which is recognised for its immaculate surrounds, critically-acclaimed track and excellent public facilities. Its trademark is traditional home-style catering.
As we head into the start of the spring racing season, keep Sunday October 16 free for the Maryborough Gold Cup. Starting at 11am, as well as a full day of harness racing there is fun for the whole family, with a jumping castle, pony trots, face painting and free icy poles.
The following week the prestigious Redwood Carnival will be run on three days starting on October 23 with a 10-race meeting featuring Australia’s best three-year-old trotters. The following Friday, October 28 will be another 10-race event, with punters offered a second-chance draw. The carnival concludes on Sunday 30 with the $50,000 Redwood Classic. The day includes prizes and give-aways, children’s entertainment (including balloon artistry) and the chance to win a $2000 gold nugget.
“Our dining area has been refurbished and can cater for up to 250 patrons. We are known in the industry for our homestyle cooking – nothing too elaborate, just good tucker. And a well-stocked bar!” Les said.
