What started as a casual chat among a group of prospectors more than a decade ago has become a major event in the calendar of gold hunters throughout Australia.

The Laanecoorie Gold Bash is back this year after a two-year hiatus, and organisers expect an enthusiastic turnout as visitors gather together to celebrate their passion for prospecting. From October 7 to 9, the Laanecoorie Lakeside Park will play host to the Bash, which will feature stalls and displays, workshops, lectures and a lot of fun.

Organiser Di Hodgson said the committee is excited to welcome people back to the event and raise some much-needed funds for the Peter McCallum Cancer Foundation.

“It’s a very welcoming environment, prospectors are really supportive of people new to the hobby,” Di said.

Di suggests people coming for the weekend book a spot at the caravan park as soon as possible. As well as local B&Bs and motels, the area also offers free camping not far from the event. Entry is free, so visitors can pop in for the day or make the most of the three days. Catering is available, or people can bring their own food, with onsite BBQs and toilet facilities available.

As a relative new comer to the prospecting world, Di encourages anyone to come along no matter their experience.

“For people new to the Bash, bring your sense of humour, be open minded,” she said.

“Detectorists are a breed of their own. They are special.”
