Central Goldfields Shire celebrated its first ever Youth Fest event last Friday where 33 young nominees were recognised for their contributions to the community.
After securing a grant of $2000 in June 2022, the Council’s Youth team invited local groups and organisations across the shire to nominate outstanding young people.
“[Young people] contribute a lot, but often go unrecognised for what they do,” Central Goldfields Shire L2P coordinator Audrey Bartlett said.
“We asked sporting clubs, schools, community groups, individuals and businesses, to nominate a young person that they think should be recognised for the work that they do in the community.”
The council received a total of 33 nominations after putting the call out.
All nominees were recognised for a range of contributions including volunteering, participation in the community, academic performance and sporting achievements.
“I’m really excited. I can’t wait for them to be recognised for what they’ve achieved, in some cases they would never have been recognised for what they’ve done,” Ms Bartlett said.
Also in attendance, Central Goldfields Shire councillor Grace La Vella in her speech to the nominees and their families said the event provided an opportunity for young people to express their ideas and have their voices heard within the community.
“You, the youth in our community, you are the leaders of tomorrow, it is never too late to learn how to lead. You will be our future mayors, our future councillors, our future prime ministers, ministers and future community leaders. Therefore, it is imperative that you, our young generation, take charge and help shape this shire how you would like to see it into the future,” she said.
This is the first time the event was held under the Youth Fest banner. It was previously celebrated as the Youth Volunteer Week.
Set to be an annual event, Youth Fest will return next year between September and October.
