Maryborough’s younger cohort impressed, but it wasn’t enough to stop Sandhurst from scoring 90 goals in their 57-goal victory.

The Magpies were closer to full strength with Tori Chandler’s return, although this would last two and a half quarters due to injury. Ella Patten was thrust into the role of goal defence, and performed admirably.

Sandhurst enjoyed the better start, scoring 21 goals from 22 attempts as their precise ball movement was on display. Maryborough, for their part, was at least able to hit the scoreboard with some regularity, scoring nine goals, with Keely Hare scoring seven times and Abbey Nalder twice.

The Dragons continued on their merry way in the second quarter as they were able to keep their hosts at bay, scoring 22 goals and again only missing one shot in a devastating display. The Magpies scored seven times during the term, with Hare scoring five times and Nalder two.

Maryborough enjoyed their best quarter in the third term, with Millie Cassidy getting a run at centre in the wake of Chandler’s injury. The Magpies were able to score 11 goals for the quarter in a decent offensive display, while Sandhurst continued their solid scoring rate, finishing with 24 goals without a miss. Hare scored on five occasions, while Nalder scored six times.

Sandhurst ran out the game well, scoring 23 goals to six in the final term to eventually increase the margin to 57 goals. Hare and Nalder both scored on three occasions each.

The Magpies can take some solace in the fact that they had been able to score 33 goals for the afternoon, a reasonable tally against the ladder-leading Dragons, who have conceded just over 31 goals a game in 2023.

It was a difficult day all-round for Maryborough, with B grade losing by 53 goals, B reserve losing by 79 goals, and the 17 and under team, in a heartbreaker, losing by just two goals in a super-impressive display against the second-placed Dragons.
