As part of the community driven Central Goldfields Shire Climate Conversations Month — October, a workshop to help householders reduce their energy bills is being run by Community Power Hub in Maryborough on October 8.

With energy costs escalating, residents are looking at smart ways to reduce power consumption or to investigate what can be done to their homes to make them more energy efficient.

Based in Bendigo, the Community Power Hub has already successfully assisted the Maryborough Community House to procure solar panels to reduce their bills, according to Barry Parsons of the Goldfields Sustainability Group.

“Participants in the coming workshop are asked to bring along a recent electricity bill to help them understand their bill, consumption and charges so that efficiency steps can be put in place where appropriate,” Mr Parsons said.

Advice on accessing the Power Saving Bonus will be provided as well as considerations when deciding on a power retailer.

The presentation will examine ways to prepare your home to maximise your energy efficiency, explore energy rating of appliances and look at a range of ways to insulate and draught-proof your house.

The community members of council’s recently adopted Climate Action Plan have set out to raise energy efficiency awareness across the shire through the Climate Action Month — October.

As well as the workshop at the Maryborough Community House, there will be more than ten moderated climate conversations involving a range community groups throughout October.

Groups already participating include a visual arts group, Girl Guides, the youth council, Zonta, Carisbrook Conversations, a Dunolly group, Maryborough Field Naturalists Club and a street harvest/community garden group.

Each conversation will involve around 10 people and is a listening to each other activity rather than a debate.

There will also be a major Household Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Forum held at the community hub on Wednesday, October 26 at 7 pm.

Organiser Tony Macer said he was very excited about the forum and is expecting a good crowd who will have the chance to access some informative guest speakers.

“There is clearly a huge appetite for more knowledge about energy efficiency as power costs rise exponentially,” he said.

“We have already run a smaller forum which was a sellout before we could publicise it. More publicity about the October forum will be out soon.”

If you would like to attend the Hack Tour Home session at the Maryborough Community House at 2 pm on October 8, registrations can be made at www.
