Demolition works are well underway revealing the hospital’s historic heart while improving access to healthcare for locals.

Maryborough and District Health Service’s (MDHS) original hospital will support its over $100 million neighbour after demolition works make way for new developments.

The growing rubble pile marks progress toward a new forecourt and patient drop-off zone, as well as accessible parking, a pedestrian ramp, extra onsite car parking and native landscaping.

It’ll be a visible change on Clarendon Street with the former ambulance bay, dental and pathology buildings, and other disused facilities demolished to accommodate the works.

It’s an effort, expected to be completed by the end of this year, which will reveal the historic hospital hidden behind generations of upgrades and expansions.

The original 1860s facade, patched-up during the works, will be a reminder of the past as the community looks to the future according to Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne.

“Maryborough and District Hospital has provided care to locals for a remarkable 165 years — we’re backing them to continue delivering world-class care for generations to come,” she said.

The works follow the completion of the facility’s $115 million expansion and upgrade in April which promised access to more healthcare options close to home.

It was an opening supported by a further $11.7 million from State Government to help the hospital hire more staff, install new equipment, and set up the new facility.

For Ripon member Martha Haylett, the demolition works are one more step in improving health outcomes for the community.

“These further upgrades at the entrance of the redeveloped Maryborough Hospital will make the hospital even easier to access, meaning local families can get the care they need sooner,” she said.

Although the original hospital may be overshadowed by its later sibling, MDHS’ historic structure is expected to play a new role as the home for administration.
