This week’s cold snap has reminded us that winter is just around the corner, a great time to start thinking about communities coming together to enjoy good humour, good company and good times at a Words in Winter event.

Held throughout the month of August, organisers of the event hope to hear from community members willing to host an event or join the volunteers to ensure this year is bigger and better than ever.

Local author Janice Simpson is organising Words in Winter 2023 along with Patty Brown in Talbot and library staff in Maryborough.

Janice encouraged people to get in touch now if you wish to put on an event, and is happy to discuss how you can manage aspects including venue, ticketing and marketing.

“It’s not hard to organise an event as there’s so many gorgeous community spaces up for grabs,” Ms Simpson said.

“Online marketing and ticketing are good to go as is word of mouth for marketing. There’s plenty of time and a ravenous appetite for this year’s Words in Winter events. Mini, medium, maxi — the choice is yours.”

As well as looking for event hosts, organisers are keen to speak with anyone who can assist with marketing and sales. They are also seeking sponsors for the festival, either direct financial assistance or through provision of products or services.

“We already have some events on the calendar — an author talk, crossword challenge, silent reading party organised by the library staff,” Ms Simpson said.

“Anything to do with words is the go, be it song, poetry, drama, prose, reading, puzzles — imagine a street community scrabble competition. Anyone up for that? In previous years Maryborough, Talbot and Dunolly have all hosted fabulous events at halls, pubs, clubs and event spaces.

“Everyone is very welcome. If you have an idea, get in touch via Words in Winter — Central Goldfields Facebook and I’ll contact you by phone or email.”
