Maryborough’s inaugural Goldfields Community Festival has been postponed at the 11th hour due to continued rain and road closures due to flash flooding, with continued rain and closed roads sealing the deal for the event.

The festival was scheduled to run from 11 am until 4 pm tomorrow, Saturday, October 15, featuring music, art, games, rides, information and activities and was developed in response to local families seeking more free, family oriented events in the shire.

Delivered by Go Goldfields in partnership with the Committee for Maryborough and Maryborough Rotary, the festival was originally going to be held in March this year however was postponed due to concerns around COVID-19.

The festival was to feature a climbing wall, laser tag tent, face painting, plenty of food and information marquees set up as well as displays and tents from a number of local groups, clubs and organisations.

Timor resident Anand Dagore was also set to make a special appearance at the festival, preparing Indian samosa, chicken curry, vegetable curry, dahl and rice.

A chef with decades of experience from working in restaurants across India and Melbourne, Anand has most recently gained a cult following on the music festival circuit catering for events across Victoria and New South Wales.

The festival would have commenced with a Dja Dja Wurrung Elder performing a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, which it’s hoped will return when the festival is able to proceed.

The Maryborough District Health Service will also host a First Nations tent with activities and a yarning circle.

Local residents Cheryle, Ruben and Audrey Vanland made the winning contribution to the Go Goldfields naming competition with the name ‘Goldfields Community Festival — Connect and Celebrate’. The festival logo also features Silver Wattle, Mana Gum and Wheat, which all hold local meaning.

The Festival is supported by the Victorian Government, Go Goldfields, Committee for Maryborough, Maryborough Rotary, Central Gold-fields Shire Council, Maryborough District Health Service, and Community Bank Avoca, Maryborough and St Arnaud.
