Capturing the attention of many, video game company Nintendo shared what the sequel to one of the best selling consoles of all time would look like. But what’s the big deal?

Released in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has gone on to be one of the best selling video game consoles of all time — internationally selling over 150 million units.

With competitive pricing, a large quantity of family-friendly games, and an innovative design that allows both on-the-go and TV gaming the console saw great success with children and busy adults alike.

Last week, Nintendo shared what its successor will look like when it’s released in June.

Simply put, the Switch 2 has a larger screen, more vibrant colours, an emphasis on online play, controllers that double as something like computer mice, and a whole new set of games made for the more powerful hardware.

However, the console is expected to cost $699 or $769 with a game bundled in — a new Mario Kart, a family-friendly racing game.

This is compared to around $469 for the base model Switch 1 or $539 for the more premium Switch OLED — not to mention the large second-hand market.

Although the Switch 2 will be the latest gaming console locals might be hearing about, the Switch 1 isn’t gone yet.

Now ‘old news’, prices are likely to drop for the console itself and its games, particularly on the second-hand market.

Almost all Switch 1 games will work on the Switch 2 as well. Some will have improvements when played on the new console, although it seems game upgrades may cost extra.

Those unfamiliar with the console, perhaps looking to buy a gift for a relative or just understand what their grandchild is talking about, are encouraged to speak with the staff at their local video game store to see what’s the best fit for them.
