Welcome event organised for new locals
Fostering the spirit of diversity in Maryborough, eager locals are hosting a unique event to welcome new international residents to the town — and everyone is invited.
An evening of ‘Building Community Connections’ is on the cards this Saturday — with people from across the town coming together to give newer residents a warm reception to Maryborough.
These fresh faces, a majority of whom have been employed by the hospital, are expected to “support the growth” of organisations as well as the wider community.
“We are delighted to welcome our nursing staff and new residents, they are vital to the development of our exciting new hospital,” Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS) director of nursing-acute Debra-Lee Holman said.
“Together we will enhance inclusiveness in our community and foster a vibrant community for everyone.”
According to Tony Macer, who has helped realise the event, it is a great opportunity for Maryborough and the shire.
“I love the way our local clubs, groups and volunteers have enthusiastically joined with MDHS to welcome our wonderful new residents,” he said.
“We want to help connect our new employees to each other and to our community so that it feels like home.
“It’s so important to further build on our community inclusiveness and diversity. We know this from similar projects in other rural communities.
“Bringing young families will help to strengthen our local economy, address worker shortages and help revitalise local clubs and sporting organisations.”
The free to attend event is sponsored by the Maryborough Lions Club — with an Indian meal available to all at no cost.
“I would encourage everyone to come along this weekend to not only enjoy good food but also form meaningful connections,” Mr Macer said.
Among those who have recently moved to the area is Ceemol Sabu, and she’s excited to call Maryborough home.
“We don’t know much about this community but we’re really interested to learn more and become a part of it,” she said.
“If we have a positive experience with everyone here, it’ll definitely make us want to settle down or live here for longer.
“In my view, whatever we are giving to the community, the community will give back to us.”
The Building Community Connections event will kick off at 5 pm for a 5.30 start on November 2 at the Salvation Army hall on 27 Wills Street.
