Classic vehicles and motorbikes will be making their way to Carisbrook this long weekend for a unique and action-packed event celebrating an Australian actor and raising money for flood affected areas.

Weekend With Hooks will celebrate the actor Roger Ward and his roles as Hooks in the movie Stone and Fifi in cult classic Aussie film, Mad Max.

Hosted by the Maryborough Harness Racing Club in partnership with South of Heaven Ltd, the event will run across two days and is sure to feature something for everyone — with everything from a memorial ride and drive, show and shine and vehicles on display to market stalls, live music, food and competitions.

Maryborough Harness Racing Club general manager Jackson Barby said the event would be similar to the Mad Max 40th anniversary celebration held at the venue in 2019.

“We worked with the same team to hold the 40th anniversary celebration for Mad Max a few years ago and that was a lot of fun, we’re very keen to have these guys back again to put this event on,” he said.

It’s expected that a crowd of around 500 people will turn out for the two-day event, with ticket sales continuing to roll in.

“Ticket sales have been going pretty well, I understand a few hundred tickets have sold already and we’re expecting 400-500 people across the weekend,” Mr Barby said.

“Hopefully we get a few more people on board in the next couple of days buying those last minute tickets because it will be a great weekend.

“The timing of the event is great, we’ve just had the Maryborough Cup so the grounds are looking pristine and the facilities are set up for a big crowd — from our point of view we’re ready to go.”

Featuring bands and artists like Whole Lotta Rosie, No Exit, Done Deal and the Black Aces, as well as demonstrations by the Kawasaki Z Owners of NSW, MFP Owners Club and Dunolly Vehicle Club, Mr Barby said the event is a sign of more to come for the area.

“Holding more events like this is something the harness racing club’s passionate about, it’s a part of our strategic plan,” he said.

“We want to become the home of functions and events here so to have something like this, which is a very unique concept for Maryborough, and to bring people to town for the long weekend is what it’s all about.”

Weekend With Hooks takes place this Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30. Gates open at the Maryborough Harness Racing Club at 12 pm on Friday.
