Warm weather sees midweek competition heat up
Bowlers had to face their opponents, the greens, and sweltering heat during round 11 of the Midweek Pennant.
The touted match of the round between first and third didn’t disappoint, as Highland Tartan showed they are the team to beat with a 66-57 win over Talbot.
Talbot deserved some points for their efforts, but Tartan was having none of it, winning all three rinks by tight margins with the closest seeing Garry Coburn hold off Matthew Vernon for a 26-25 victory.
Coburn’s teammates followed in his footsteps, as Michael Fryar defeated Chris Crossley and Gregory Shay overcame Barbara Crossley by the same scoreline, 20-16.
Highland Gold made their trip to Carisbrook a successful one, taking home 14 points with a 57-27 victory against Carisbrook.
Roy Crawley and Paul Gothard cleaned up their rinks for Gold, with the former besting Ross Gregory 29-6 and the latter prevailing over Laurence Cassidy 21-8.
Denise Matic managed to grab two points for Carisbrook, taking a highly competitive contest against Lowen Clarke 13-7.
That minor slip up by Highland Gold allowed Maryborough Golf to close the gap for the last finals spot to one point, showcasing their muscle over Avoca 83-26.
Kort Gay made the opening statement for Golf, proving too much for Ian Proctor in a 31-5 victory, while teammate Elizabeth Bucknall vanquished Ann Loosmore 22-13 and Graeme Orr took a commanding 30-8 win over Daniel Giddings.
Dunolly Blue took the battle between the two sister teams, claiming full points in a dominant 86-31 win over Dunolly Gold.
Chris Williams was too good for Fabio Delconte in his 30-8 win while Tony Galofaro continued to get the ball rolling with a 34-10 sweep of Walter Mackley.
Alan Weir finished things off for Dunolly Blue with a 22-13 victory against Wayne Stephens.
As players prepare to play in what will hopefully be cooler conditions, round 12’s game of the round will pit Dunolly Blue against Maryborough Golf.
With Maryborough Golf the underdogs in that contest, the team above them, Highland Gold, will look to extend their lead of fourth when they face bottom-of-the-table Dunolly Gold.
Third-placed Talbot will take a trip down the Pyrenees Highway as they look to avenge their 64-62 loss in round five to Avoca.
In the final game of the round, Highland Tartan aim to increase their lead at the top of the table when they host Carisbrook.
