Young people value the opinions of role models in their lives, including leaders in sport, so as part of VicHealth’s Vape-Free Victoria initiative, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation is rolling out training to help local sporting clubs tackle vaping in their communities.

A local session will take place next Tuesday, March 18 at the Maryborough Tennis Centre from 6 until 6.45 pm.

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s CEO, Dr Erin Lalor AM, said the training was designed to support clubs to start a conversation about vaping with their younger members, to help them make informed decisions about their health.

“We’re using 25 years’ of learnings from running Australia’s largest community health sports program, Good Sports, and our expertise at translating the latest evidence on alcohol and other drugs, to deliver tailored vaping education at a grassroots level,” she said.

“Using input from our Good Sports clubs, the new program provides information sessions and resources covering the facts about vaping and why it’s harmful, as well as practical tips for supporting young people to cut back and give up.

“The use of vapes, especially by young people, has been increasing in Australia, so it’s important that they learn from trusted adults in their lives, such as role models in sport, about the risks and impacts.

“Community sporting clubs can play a really important role when it comes to modelling healthy behaviours and reducing and preventing the risk of alcohol and other drug harms, which is why this program is so important.

“We welcome all community sport leaders in the area to come along to the upcoming workshop so we can work together to improve the health and well-being of future generations.”

Registrations for the free workshop are essential and can be made online at events.humanitix. com/tackling-vaping-in-community-sport-central-goldfields.
