Undermanned Pumas impress in defeat to Giants
A depleted Pumas line-up proved unable to become “Giant killers” in their AFL Masters Vic Country season opener on Sunday, March 29.
Weakened through late withdrawals due to injury and unavailability, Maryborough fell three goals short of a strong Goulburn Valley side, defeated 12.9 (81) to the Giants’ 15. 8 (98) at Kialla Recreation Reserve in Shepparton.
The visitors’ line-up, which included several players carrying various niggles, was generously bolstered by a contingent of GV Giants’ players, ensuring an even contest.
Puma veteran Gav McGrath said the effort was a credit to the Maryborough players who made the trip, which included two debutants, as well as the local volunteers who wore the red-and-blue during the match.
“I guess it’s easy to enjoy your footy when everything’s going your way, but to travel and play under such circumstances, I’m really proud of the effort,” he said.
“Justin Robinson and Mike Dickins pulled on our colours for the first time and fit right in. It was a real positive for us on a day that could have been a real challenge.
“I think it says a lot about the attitude and spirit of Masters footy that there was no shortage of GV players willing to help us out and make the trip worthwhile.”
New coach Lauchlan Williams was outstanding for the Pumas, kicking two goals on the way to being awarded best on ground by his Giants opponents.
Jackson Fitzpatrick was also among Maryborough’s best, along with Dickson (one goal) and Robinson.
The Pumas will next host Macorna Tigers on April 19 in Maryborough.
