Maryborough gave it their all in the T20 Just for Girls competition in the first week of play, but were unable to prevent two losses to Grampians and Castlemaine respectively.
The Maryborough team were making their return to the competition for 2023, and were looking to put together two competitive performances against some strong competition.
In the first of two games on Sunday, Maryborough won the bat flip, and decided to bat first.
There were some strong performances with the bat, including from Arabella Koop, who top-scored with 10 runs, while Izabella Adam finished with eight.
Maryborough finished with 51 from their 20 overs, finding it difficult to get away from Grampians’ strong bowling lineup.
Grampians proved much too strong when it was their turn to bat, with Abby Arch and Kiah Arch combining for 43 runs to help them score 2/98 off their 20 overs.
Koop followed up her strong outing with the bat with an even better performance with the ball, leading from the front with 2/5 off her three overs.
Maryborough’s second game was against an equally-strong Castlemaine outfit, who won the bat flip and elected to bat first.
Thanks largely to their top order, Castlemaine were able to put on 87 in the first 10 overs, but an impressive finish to the innings saw Maryborough concede just 31 runs in the final half of their fielding innings to leave Castlemaine on 3/118 off 20 overs.
Koop continued her strong day, taking all three wickets to finish with 3/5 off three overs, and overall figures of 5/10 for the day. When it came time for Maryborough to bat, Castlemaine’s strong bowling line-up came to the fore, with six players taking wickets.
However, Tamicka Loone-Grundy fought hard against the tide, top-scoring with 10 runs to lead the way with the bat.
Maryborough were eventually bowled out for 39 off 18.5 overs, but overall, the day was a success, with good home support for the team that was brought together under the guidance of Leigh Koop.
The team will now look to finish strongly next Sunday at Kyneton Showgrounds Recreation Reserve when they play Gisborne in the first game of the day, before their final match later in the afternoon.
