The Maryborough and District Triathlon Club conducted the longest event on its 2023/24 club calendar from the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre on October 8 in excellent triathlon conditions.
The event was a long course triathlon which also featured the short course option. Course lengths were long course — 400 m swim, 20 km ride, and 4 km run, and short course — 200 m swim, 4 km ride, and 1 km run.
The long course field featured a regional field of triathletes including Jeff Beer, Cooper Mark, Ararat’s Sam Jones, and Bendigo’s Greg Croft.
All triathletes enjoyed strong performances in the pool with Beer assuming the lead as the triathletes exited Maryborough on the 20 km loop ride out to Craigie, Carisbrook, and back to Maryborough. With light winds on the day all triathletes were able to produce outstanding cycle legs as they entered transition for the final 4 km run leg.
Beer, who has been training strongly throughout the 2023/24 season, reaped the benefits, as he crossed the finish line in the fastest time of the day (62:40) to win the open male category.
Next across the line was young gun triathlete Mark to win the under 16 male category (72:33), Croft (76:16) won the 50+ male category, and Jones (86:46) powered to the finish line to win the open female category.
Ella Govan won the under 16 female category in the impressive time of 22:43, and Kate Cain improved on her September course time to win the open female category in a time of 27:06.
The next club event will be a repeat of the October event on Sunday, November 12 from the Maryborough Sport and Leisure Centre. Registrations commence at 9 am for a 9.30 am start.
