Trentham maintained their hold on sixth place on the MCDFNL ladder after eventually shaking off Newstead on Saturday afternoon.
While the eventual winning margin of 12 goals suggested a reasonably comfortable affair, it would prove to be anything but — while the Saints led at every change, they would not be ahead by more than four goals until the final quarter.
The early stages suggested that Newstead were well and truly up for the fight, with the first quarter spoils evenly shared, thanks to both teams scoring 10 goals apiece.
However, the Saints began to make their move in the second quarter, scoring 16 goals to 12 to open up a four-goal half time lead.
Newstead, fighting for their season and their finals spot, had their best quarter of the afternoon in the third period, scoring 13 goals to 11 to reduce the margin to two goals at the final change.
But in what was an entertaining, high-scoring final quarter, the Saints scored 21 goals to Newstead’s 11 to ensure they would win 58-46.
For the victorious Saints, Brooke Healy, Jade Cass and Prue Higgins were voted their best, with Elysia Rose scoring 36 goals.
Newstead’s best players were Emma Jenkyn, Sophie Bond and Layla Benson-Zepnick, while Kirby Kneebone was their best performer in the goal circle, scoring 29 goals.
