Trentham too good for Avoca in 116-point win

Avoca was very admirable in the first half against the Trentham Saints on Saturday, being just three goals behind against one of the premiership favourites, but the Saints were far too strong for the remainder of the game, winning by 116 points.

Avoca had no answer for the mercurial James Regan, who kicked 10 goals for the game to take his season tally to 51 goals to lead the MCDFNL goal-kicking table by 11 goals ahead of Carisbrook’s Tim Rinaldi on 40 goals.

It was a competitive first half, but inaccuracy was costly for the Bulldogs, as eight goals in each of the third and fourth quarters to the Saints made it look like a training drill to which the Bulldogs had no answers.

The Bulldogs and the Saints have played 29 times since 2005 and the Bulldogs have won 15 of those contests.

However, the Saints have won the last six times they have met, and in very convincing fashion.

James Regan’s accuracy in front of goal saw him awarded best on ground honours, while others to play well in the massive victory were Edward Fanning, Jake Keogh, Taylor Ford, Thomas Fuller and Mitch Jensen.

The consistent Scott Cawthan was named as the Bulldogs’ best, along with Riley Hamilton, Byron Wynd, Alex Riches, Darcy Carey, and Tyson Gray, with Wynd being the only multiple-goal scorer with two goals.
