Trentham showed that they will still be one of the teams to beat in 2023, with new coach Clive Raak taking them to a first-up win over Navarre.

It was a terrific performance by the Saints across the board as the forward line enjoyed some stellar delivery throughout the first three quarters, before eventually easing to a 30-point win.

A dominant first quarter saw the Saints kick four goals to just two behinds to immediately take control of the contest, leading by 26 points at the first change.

The game tightened up a little bit in the second quarter, with both teams scoring three goals apiece, but the Saints were still able to hold a 28-point lead at the main break.

The Saints put the game away in the third quarter, kicking four goals to the Hoppers’ one to open up a game-high 46-point cushion at the final break.

The Hoppers had their most productive quarter of the day in the last, kicking three goals to nil, but the damage was done, with the Saints winning by 30 points.

Joel Cowan and captain Dylan Holden were elite across midfield, while Cooper Webber-Mirkin, Alister Ferrier and Jake Keogh showed that they will continue to be a handful for opposition defensive units, combining for nine goals, with Webber-Mirkin leading the way with four.

Co-coaches Billy Parry and Jack Jess were best for Navarre, with Bill Driscoll, Angus Barham, William Marshman and Trent Driscoll also named in the best. Bill led the way with three goals, while brother Cody kicked two.
