Trentham steamroll goalless Newstead
Trentham continues to march at the top of the MCDFNL following a dominant performance against Newstead, holding the visitors to just two points at Trentham Reserve in their 144-point victory.
The loss, coupled with Maldon’s win over Campbells Creek, has officially eliminated the Steaders from finals contention with two rounds left in the regular season.
Playing their last home game of the season, the Saints put on a show, with MCDFNL leading goalkicker James Regan booting a game-high seven goals, supplemented by returning AFL Hall of Famer Brent Harvey kicking four and Edward Fanning, Thomas Fuller, Zachary Gervasoni and Joseph Nesci all scoring two.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic for Trentham, as Newstead started strongly with their finals chances on life support.
Star midfielders Joel Smith and Michael Dalrymple were winning the ball regularly for the Steaders, while Nicholas Woodman and Ben Moran were superb marshalling their defensive 50.
Despite multiple forays forward, Newstead couldn’t hit the scoreboard, ensuring early goals from Harvey and Regan gave the hosts a 16-point lead heading into quarter time.
After Harvey found Regan in the goal square for the first goal of the second quarter and Fanning added another a minute later, the floodgates began to open for the Saints.
Eight goals in the second quarter gave Trentham a 67-point lead heading into half time, and showed no signs of letting up in the third quarter.
While Gervasoni and Taylor Ford were marshalling the air, taking several contested marks, Fuller, Joel Cowan and Joel Dovaston were punishing Newstead with some brilliant passes to Regan and Harvey, leading to easy goals.
Following a nine-goal third quarter, the Saints were allowed to take their foot off the gas with a triple-digit lead heading into the final quarter, remaining at the top of the MCDFNL ladder after the final siren.
Even with the Saints’ offensive prowess, Ford was named as the host’s best player ahead of Gervasoni, Mitchell Peeler, Regan, Harvey and Liam Ratliff.
Newstead’s Smith, Dalrymple, Woodman, Moran, Austin Peace and Devin Gordois put in a great effort against the tide, listed as the visitors’ best players.
