Seven goals to Jake Keogh and an excellent performance across the board from Trentham’s midfielders provided the impetus for the Saints to run away with a 76-point victory over the Maryborough Giants.
The Saints got off to the better start in the opening term at Trentham Reserve in what was a reasonably even contest early on, but were proving to be more accurate in front of goals, kicking four straight, compared to the Giants one goal from their four scoring shots, as they took a 15-point lead into the first change.
The second quarter was a beauty, as 15 goals were scored. The Giants, to their credit, did everything they possibly could to stay in the contest, and kicked six goals in their best quarter of football from an offensive standpoint so far.
But Trentham haven’t been one of the best attacking teams over the last few seasons by accident, kicking nine goals of their own in the second to hold a 33-point lead at the main break.
The Saints started to power away a little bit more in the third quarter, in what was a quarter reminiscent of the first. They kicked another four goals, while holding the Giants to a solitary goal, to extend their lead to 51 points at the final change.
It was all Trentham in the last quarter as they finished very strongly, kicking six goals to two. The Saints had a field day in front of goal, kicking 23 goals from 30 scoring shots, and opening their account for 2024.
Joel Dovaston was best on ground for the Saints, and he had many mates, with Thomas Fuller, reigning Berry Powell medallist Joel Cowan, Sam Kelly, Adam Raak and Keogh.
Keogh’s seven goals powered the Saints, as did James Regan’s four-goal haul and Ryan Thiesz’s three goals.
The Giants will be relatively pleased with some of their efforts at times, and while there’s still plenty to work on, they will be happy they could show they were able to match it at times with an offensive powerhouse such as Trentham.
Lachlan Bates had another outstanding game through the midfield, while Rhys Wagstaff, Riley Govan, Jack Broad and Peter Wytkamp were also named in the best.
Murray Bond kicked three goals, while Mitch Whelan and Jacob Rollason added two each.
