Trentham onslaught wrests win from Harcourt
A second-half offensive outpour allowed Trentham to conquer Harcourt by 11 goals in a highly entertaining contes
Hannah Weier and Georgia Fearn brought a valuable attacking spark on debut for the Saints, helping the visitors turn a nail-biting two-goal half time lead into a precious double-digit advantage with a 19-10 third quarter.
That frantic flourish proved decisive, improving Trentham’s standing inside the top eight after netting their highest score in 2026 and extending Harcourt’s winless start despite another strong performance.
Weier and Fearn weren’t the only netballers possessing new colours on Saturday, as midcourter Emily McDonald was also making her first impression for Trentham, starting at wing attack.
While the Saints hoped a wave of fresh faces would keep the momentum of their 31-goal victory over Maldon rolling, Harcourt was relatively unchanged from the team that challenged Carisbrook the week prior, despite the impactful inclusion of Ella Rule.
As expected, the first quarter was a low-scoring affair as both teams’ stellar defences cemented their presence early.
Alongside the reliable anchor of Jessica Walker, Amy Vandenham and Madelyne Brennan ensured every Harcourt possession was laborious with their coverage in the defensive third.
Not to be upstaged, Harcourt’s Laura Suckling and Carly Chaplin continued to prove themselves as one of the competition’s most formidable defensive pairings.
With the assistance of their tireless midcourt powered by Morgan Howorth and Ursula van Dyk, the duo kept Charli Copeland and Sharna Ford to eight goals in the first quarter, allowing the Lions to take a one-goal lead into the opening interval.
With a deeper bench at her disposal, Saints player-coach Walker wasted no time making alterations at the break, bringing on Weier at goal shooter and substituting Fearn into wing attack. That necessitated McDonald and Vandenham shifting back defensively in the midcourt.
The changes paid immediate dividends for the visitors, with Weier providing a constant avenue of scoring.
With Trentham’s revamped offence threatening to take over, the Lions roared an emphatic response as this contest turned from a defensive arm wrestle to an end-to-end thriller.
Jordan Bagley and Jarrenhy Webb were effectively capitalising on deliveries from Howorth and Zoe McLean with their pinpoint shooting to keep the Lions within two goals at half time after relinquishing their lead to Trentham during the second term.
Despite her team holding pole position, Walker remained emboldened to shuffle her lineup, boldly taking herself and leading scorer Ford off to start the second half. A new defensive duo of Lauren Girvan and Madelyn Keeping was now in place, while Fearn replaced Ford at goal attack.
For the second quarter running, Walker’s gambles jackpotted, as newcomers Weier, Fearn and McDonald showed immediate chemistry in the attacking third.
Unlike the second quarter, the Lions were unable to respond, as Girvan and Keeping instantly made an impact despite neither playing a minute in the first half.
Off the back of their highest scoring quarter of the season, the Saints created a noticeable 11-goal gap by three-quarter time.
A determined Harcourt ensured the final quarter remained hotly contested, but with Trentham effectively managing their offensive possessions and protecting the netball, they were doomed to a bitter defeat.
Weier, McDonald and Fearn all had debuts to remember for Trentham, with Weier finishing with a game-high 34 goals in large part to the entry passes of McDonald and Fearn.
Fearn also added three alongside the reliable Ford’s 14 goals and Copeland’s two goals in the first quarter.
Harcourt’s Bagley ended with a season-best 25 goals, with Webb providing 17 goals of her own.
