Trentham have kept their season alive, with their crucial 17-goal victory over Newstead away from home allowing the Saints to remain one game behind the top eight.

The Saints relished the wet conditions to get the jump on the Kangaroos, scoring 15 goals to seven to open up an eight-goal lead at the opening change. Jacqui Bell scored 13 goals, while Zahlia Turton added two for the Saints, while for Newstead, Tayla Gale scored on four occasions and Bri Jury three.

It was a lot tighter in the second quarter, but the Saints were still able to build a crucial break in scoring 12 goals to 10, leading 27-17 at the main break. The Saints had a boost with former playing-coach Sharna Ford making a return, scoring two goals in her first quarter of the season, while Bell scored nine goals and Turton one for the Saints, while for the Kangaroos, Gale scored seven times and Jury three.

Conditions worsened during the third term as the Saints continued to have every answer for the Kangaroos, scoring 12 goals to 10 for the term to make it a 12-goal lead at the final change, 39-27. Turton scored seven goals, while Bell scored five for the Saints, while for the Kangaroos, Jury scored seven goals and Gale three.

The resistance Newstead had shown to try get themselves back into the game was broken in the last term as Trentham finished full of running, scoring 16 goals in their best quarter of the afternoon, while Newstead scored 11 goals.

Bell finished with 12 goals to make it 39 for the afternoon, while Turton added four for the Saints, while for the Kangaroos, Gale scored eight goals to finish with 22, while Jury scored three times.

Both teams now face a season-defining stretch. Newstead, with two losses in a row, will now travel to Talbot, while Trentham will host Avoca.
