Don’t be fooled by Trentham’s 34-point victory — the Saints had to work incredibly hard to secure the four points at Newstead Recreation Reserve after a fierce challenge from the Kangaroos.

Realistically, it was only the last quarter where the Saints were able to get on top after a terrific battle with Newstead.

The first quarter saw both teams get ample opportunities throughout, but both teams were only able to kick one goal apiece, with Newstead having seven scoring shots, and Trentham five, and the Kangaroos led by two points at the first change.

The game started to open up a little bit more in the second term, and as a result, the goals started to flow. Newstead were able to extend their lead, however, and kicked three goals to two to lead by six points at the main break.

The third quarter was a mighty battle as the teams fought it out in arguably the wettest conditions of the day. It was a goal-for-goal affair as the Saints were able to take the lead for the first time at the end of the third term, leading by two points at the final change.

With plenty to play for, Trentham lifted to a level that Newstead were unable to keep up with, as the Kangaroos’ brave fight came to an end.

The Saints kicked four goals from 12 scoring shots as they dominated proceedings, and eventually took a victory that seemed more comfortable than it looked.

It’s safe to say Joel Cowan relishes the wet conditions. After a best-on-ground effort a few weeks ago against Carisbrook in similar conditions, he was at it again on Saturday to lead the Saints over the line, while Michael Hourigan, Joel Dovaston, Taylor Ford, Edward Fanning and Stefan Lendrec were also in the best.

While Newstead will be disappointed to let an opportunity against a top team slip, they should also take some confidence out of their performance. Anthony Robins was busy as always, while Adam Hunter, Rhys Smith, Hayden Hall, Jedd Pedretti and Mitchell Williams were also named in the best players.
