While Dunolly took the lead for three quarters at the Trentham Sports Ground Reserve on Saturday, the home side fought hard to close the margin right up to the last.

Dunolly took to the court with much to prove following its round one defeat at the hands of Carisbrook, and equally so did Trentham following their dismantling by Natte Bealiba the week prior.

Scoring 13 goals to Trentham’s seven in the first quarter, there were promising signs for Dunolly from the get go, but would it prove enough of a margin to secure them the match?

A close second quarter saw Trentham reduce Dunolly’s lead by two goals, scoring 15 to the visitors 13.

A hard fought third quarter saw this margin reduce again, with Dunolly’s grasp slipping by one goal to see the scores read 36-39 at the close of the third quarter.

The final 15 minutes of play can only be described as hotly contested.

Starting on the back foot, Trentham averaged a goal a minute in the fourth, outscoring the visiting Dunolly who scored 12 goals of their own to further reduce Dunolly’s lead — with the conclusion of 60 minutes’ play seeing both sides sit at 51 all.

A combined effort by Trentham’s Kasey Button and Hayley Bourke, scoring at 66 and 74 percent accuracy respectively was effectively mirrored by Dunolly’s scoring duo of Lillie Wrigley and Zoe Aldridge at 67 and 75 percent conversion rates, indicating just how hotly contested the second round match was.
