Trentham has secured a big win over Carisbrook, retaining first place on the ladder, despite the Redbacks repeating their round one antics of coming from behind in the closing term.

When these two teams met in round one, the Saints looked like they had the result in the bag until the Redbacks dug deep to reduce the margin to just 10 points by the final siren.

Thirteen rounds on, the pressure was on for the top two teams in the league to settle which one of them will head into finals as minor premier.

It was a rough start for both teams in difficult conditions, with Trentham kicking two goals and Carisbrook, just two behinds.

The Saints got it together by the second term with six straight goals, but Brook had some missed opportunities with two goals to sit 35 points down at half time.

Trentham enjoyed the spell, returning to the field for a two-goal third quarter and keeping Carisbrook to just two behinds with the scoreboard heavily in Trentham’s favour, leading by eight goals at the final change.

Despite the margin, Brook put on an absolute show in the fourth quarter, kicking seven goals to three to take what could have been a big loss down to a moderate 24-point slip-up.

While the Saints were certainly more consistent, the Redbacks showed a determination and grit that will likely serve them well over the finals series, as it has done in many seasons past.

Ryan Bourke, Riley Matricardi, Jack Mighell, Darcy Matricardi, Zac Gervasoni and Joel Cowan were best on for the Saints, with Liam Bianco, Jake Keogh and Cooper Webber-Mirkin kicking three goals each in the win.

Bailey Edwards returned with a best-on-ground performance for Brook alongside Ash Munari, Harley Hunter, Jackson Bowen, Zak Rinaldi and Andrew Toan. Zelencich kicked three goals and Toan kicked two.

Carisbrook closes its home and away season with a game against Talbot in round 15 and Navarre in round 16, while Trentham plays Newstead and then Talbot on the road to finals.
