It was a tough day for Maryborough last week as they could not contain the potent force of a much-improved Eaglehawk team.

The Hawks were one of the busier teams in the transfer window, adding the likes of former St Kilda captain Jarryn Geary, and on evidence of their two wins, look very likely to jump into the Bendigo Football Netball League top five.

Pre-game, the Magpies received a boost when they were able to play Lucas Hurse, who had returned from the Bendigo Pioneers for the week.

But Maryborough were unable to provide any resistance during the first quarter as Eaglehawk were able to provide too much firepower, kicking the first nine goals of the game without response.

The Magpies were able to get some reward for effort late in the quarter, as Alex Brown pounced after some good Maryborough pressure to kick a goal.

After conceding 10 goals in the first quarter, the Magpies needed a response, and while there were fewer goals in the second quarter, they were unable to put any goals on the board themselves, and seven Hawks goals saw them sit 101 points behind at the main break.

The third quarter continued to show the gulf between a team expected to compete in finals and a developing Maryborough outfit as the Hawks added seven more goals from 14 scoring shots to sit 148 points in front at the last change.

The last quarter was Maryborough’s best for the day. Despite the Hawks continuing to dominate territory, the Magpies were able to hold them to two goals from 11 shots to limit some damage.

In the end, Eaglehawk prevailed by 169 points, kicking 26.23 (179) to Maryborough’s 1.4 (10).

While it was a tough day for the club, Mitch McClure never gave up, while Chris Freeman, Brown, Nic Swan, Alex Gavriliadis and Jake Postle were also named in the best for their efforts.

While the seniors and reserves had a tough day with two losses, there was an immense positive when the under 18s went 2-0 courtesy of a 41-point win over the Hawks.

A seven-goal haul from Taj Bond helped the Magpies take the win, while there were good performances from Oscar Tatchell, Jarrah Edwards, Kaian Constable, James Woods, Brodie Quinlan and Bailey Walhouse.
