A wild weekend of lawn bowls has seen the outlook for both division one and two change again.
DIVISION ONE
Dunolly Blue have extended their lead on top of the ladder to 28 points after a weekend which saw them take full points, while nearest challenger Talbot Gold slipped up and dropped to fourth.
A dominant 81-20 win over stablemates Dunolly Gold helped the leaders increase their percentage as well.
Peter Waters took a 27-8 win over Roy Pickering, while Gregory Dobbin had the most dominant win of the day, scoring a 33-4 win over Frank Mifsud. Tony Galofaro finished off the job with a 21-8 win over Jim Haigh.
Coming into the weekend, Talbot Gold sat in second, 21 points behind Dunolly Blue. However, Highland White came to Talbot determined to keep their season alive, and took a 68-45 win which saw them move into fifth spot on the ladder.
Highland White narrowly missed out on taking all three rinks, with Lawrence Barry missing out by just one shot, losing 16-17 to Paul Radstock. But Dennis Prosser’s 22-17 win over Peter McLaughlan and Paul Gothard’s 30-11 win over Peter Fletcher helped give Highland White crucial points.
Highland Tartan are back into the top two on the ladder after disposing of Newstead Blue 71-35.
Garry Coburn defeated Bill Burnett 29-5, while Michael Fryar got the job done over David Cobden 29-10. Newstead Blue did get two competition points back in their quest to stay up, with Brian Daly defeating Greg Shay 20-13.
Avoca Red’s top-two chances remain alive and well, but had to fight the whole way with Maryborough Golf Blue before taking a 51-49 win.
It was a very tight affair for the entirety of the game, with Gerry Carmody taking two points for Golf with a 20-15 win over Daniel Giddings. But Noel Parratt’s 21-15 win over Anthony Chambers, as well as Graeme Orr’s 15-14 win over Harold Patullo, gave Avoca the impetus they needed to sit in third position, just one point behind Highland Tartan.
DIVISION TWO
Just 20 points separate the top four on the ladder after another thrilling round of division two bowls.
Highland Red maintained top spot on the ladder without having to bowl a ball, with Newstead White forfeiting.
Much of the intrigue saw Carisbrook and Talbot Brown’s meeting come down to the wire, before Carisbrook eventually took a 61-53 win.
Ron Baker took a 25-16 win over Barb Crossley, while Syd Pearson defeated Ray Prentice 20-15. Steven Murray did get two points back for Talbot with a 22-16 win over Phillip Burt, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
Maryborough Golf Gold maintained their status in the top four thanks to a 65-43 win.
The damage was done on the first rink, with Ross Andrews taking a 34-12 win over Philip Best. Trevor Young continued the job with a 20-10 win over Jim Brookshaw, and while Eric Cook grabbed two points for Maldon with a 21-11 win over John Scott, the result crucially keeps Golf in the top four.
Avoca Gold kept their top four chances alive with a 58-47 win over Dunolly Green.
Wayne Stephens gave Dunolly Green two points with a 20-18 win over Loralee Field, but Avoca Gold took control of the other two rinks, with Allyson Hearnden winning 20-12 over Aaron Britten, and Rebecca Zeuschner defeating Fabio Delconte 20-15.
ROUND EIGHT
With the top four teams meeting in division one, the stakes continue to remain high as the second half of the season begins.
Talbot Gold welcomes ladder-leader Dunolly Blue to Talbot Bowls Club as they look to bounce back from last week’s loss.
Second position is on the line when Avoca Red hosts Highland Tartan, while Golf Blue will be hoping to get back into the top four race when they travel to Dunolly to face bottom team Dunolly Gold.
Highland White will be hoping to take advantage of the top four squabble when they travel to Newstead Blue.
In division two, the pick of the games sees second-placed Talbot Brown travel to Maryborough Golf Gold, with just 10 points separating both teams.
Ladder-leader Highland Red will look to maintain their status as the best team in the competition at this stage when they host Maldon, while Carisbrook will look to take advantage of the battle between the teams around them when they host Dunolly Green.
Avoca Gold will look to keep their top four chances intact when they host Newstead White.
