It now looks to be a race in six for a finals spot following the return of midweek pennant in hot conditions on Tuesday morning.
The surprise result was the ease with which Dunolly Blue was able to get the job done against Talbot, eventually winning 85-28 to take home 14 points, effectively almost sealing a top-two spot for themselves and Highland Tartan in the process.
Heather Freemantle took a dominant 38-2 victory over Noreen Norris, while Tony Galofaro was able to take a similar victory over Peter McLoughlin, winning 31-5. Talbot did at least get to take home two competition points, with Robert Jackson winning 21-16 over Margaret Davies.
Highland Tartan kept top spot, as well as dealing a blow to Avoca’s hopes of holding on to fourth spot, thanks to a straightforward 79-46 victory.
It was a 42-12 victory from Jan Turner over Daniel Giddings which effectively ended the tie from the get-go, while a 19-13 win from Greg Shay over Ann Loosmore ensured they would take home 14 points. Avoca was able to take two competition points which could yet prove vital with a 21-18 victory from Christine Bearpark over Leanne Wallis.
Carisbrook closed to within eight points of Avoca and have almost ended Highland Gold’s finals chances thanks to a tense 59-57 victory.
It was Denise Matic’s team which got the all-important victory, 23-6 over Lowen Clarke’s team, helping them fend off Highland Gold despite losing the remaining two rinks, with Highland Gold getting four points through Tony Lacey’s team winning 28-24 over Judith Cassidy and Albert Spencer defeating Leonie Briggs 23-12.
Likewise, Dunolly Gold kept their finals chances alive with a strong 65-41 victory over Maryborough Golf, putting them within 10 points of Avoca in sixth.
Dunolly Gold took all 16 points on offer, with Jill Morse defeating Elizabeth Bucknall 20-11, Jim Haigh defeating Marian Webb 22-12 and Barry Mortlock winning the closest rink 23-18 over Donna Bauer.
With four rounds to go, all results are of importance in the lead-up to finals.
Talbot will be looking to bounce back from their big loss when they host Maryborough Golf, as they look to secure third place on the ladder.
Avoca will have a critically important meeting with Highland Gold, where a win will help them stave off the threat that is being posed to them by Carisbrook and Dunolly Gold, who face tricky match-ups respectively.
Dunolly Gold will be required to protect their home patch against top team Highland Tartan, while Carisbrook will look to do likewise when they host second-placed Dunolly Blue.
