Summer weather is finally rearing its head in the Central Goldfields and just in time for Christmas, with weather for the festive day to remain on par with recent years, with sunshine and warm weather on the cards.

After a cool and wet spring, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is anticipating lower temperatures over the summer months for much of Victoria, with a top of 33and low of 12degrees forecast for Christmas Day.

According to the BOM’s long-range forecasting, cooler days are likely throughout summer, with December’s hottest day so far reaching 34.2°, the second time this month the mercury has tipped above the 30° mark compared to 10 days last December.

The cooler forecasts for summer are largely due to climate drivers such as a La Niña in the Pacific Ocean, a positive Southern Annular Mode and warmer ocean waters around Australia.

The BOM had predicted this December to be unusually cool, with a 51 percent chance of temperatures below 24.7°, which means the Central Goldfields could well continue the trend of cooler Christmas days, with 24° and 28° respectively recorded in 2020 and 2021.

Into the new year, the BOM’s long-range forecast is predicting a greater than 60 percent chance for maximum temperatures to be warmer than average for much of the country, with minimum temperatures also very likely to be warmer than average.
