Around 40 community mem-bers gathered to see the un-veiling of the restored gates at the Timor Cemetery on Sunday.
While the cemetery itself was opened in 1870, the gates that now stand were added in 1928 through public donations and fundraising.
A number of former trust members, volunteers and community members were thanked for their contribution to the cemetery over the years during the opening of the gates, including the late Martin Saul, who’s wife Moira was presented with a certificate of appreciation on his behalf.
The cemetery trust’s Peter Cameron said it was a community effort to restore the gates.
“The gates were put here in 1928 and it was important to the cemetery trust and community that they be restored,” he said.
“It means a lot to the community to see the gates like this now.”
Fellow trust member Glen Ipsen noted the number of enquiries regarding historic and family graves he receives during Sunday’s opening.
“I receive letters and phone calls fairly often from people trying to track down the graves of relatives and thanks to the efforts of volunteers and the trust over the years, we have most of that information on display here,” he said.
Local councillor Chris Meddows-Taylor said the efforts of trust members to maintain cemeteries couldn’t be overstated.
“The efforts of the cemetery trust need to be commended, look at how fantastic the gates look and how well maintained and cared for the cemetery is, thank you and con-gratulations to the trust for your efforts,” he said.
