Lexton have dramatically secured their spot in the finals with a second come-from-behind win over Newstead this season — this time by the barest of margins.

It’s the second time this year a game has been decided by just one point, joining Natte Bealiba’s victory over Maldon in round seven.

But the Tigers’ heroics means that they can now likely prepare for a clash with either Navarre or an elimination final rematch with Maldon in two weeks’ time.

Newstead made a fast start, just as they did in the corresponding round two clash, kicking four goals to one in the opening term to open up a 19-point lead.

Lexton hit back in the second term, kicking six goals to two to hit the front, and opened up a nine-point lead at the main break.

The third quarter showed what a rollercoaster game it was, as Newstead this time took the initiative. They were able to retake the lead as they kicked four goals to two to lead by two points at the final change.

With the season on the line for both teams, they threw everything at trying to secure the four points.

Lexton kicked the first three goals of the quarter to open up an 18-point lead, but Newstead responded with the next three to tie up the scores at the 25-minute mark.

But with the final thrust of the game, Tyler Trickey was able to mark inside 50 on a tight angle, and kicked a behind with what turned out to be the third-last kick of the day to seal the Tigers’ finals berth.

Lexton’s goalkickers were not provided at the time of publication, but their best players were James Templeton, Luke Arvidson, Adrian Verhoeven, Darren Cook, Lachlan Rokebrand and Jack Peacock.

Newstead now face a battle to get into the finals. They still hold a percentage break on Dunolly and Talbot, but with the Eagles taking on second-placed Carisbrook, arguably their biggest threat comes from the Hawks, who will be looking to repeat their 105-point win against Royal Park from round three.

That, coupled with a trip to Navarre, means the Kangaroos are in a position where they need to win next week, otherwise, they’ll need to keep some calculators handy.

They had Tyler James kick five goals, and he was named in the best alongside Cordie McKendry, Todd Delahey, Rhys Smith, Anthony Robins and Harrison Harbrow.
