It was predicted that this contest had the potential to be one of the matches of the round and it wasn’t far off the mark as Newstead won by just 14 points in wet conditions as they fought off the challenge of Talbot in the dying stages.

It was a goal for goal battle in the opening term and it was the Steaders that opened the goal scoring when James Mason kicked a snapshot goal under pressure from his opponent. Talbot answered immediately from the next centre bounce when Matty Bond kicked truly.

Journeyman Adam Pollock suited up for the Steaders and played a big role in their victory, scoring a goal in the opening term and set up another to Rhys Smith as they led by eight points at the first change.

The rain continued to fall, and it was a dour struggle in the second term. Tyler James snapped a goal for Newstead just two minutes in the quarter, but Bond received a free kick shortly after in the goal square to answer for the Hawks.

A number of minor scores resulted from the next 15 minutes of play but Pollock pulled in a pack mark directly in front of goal at the 20-minute mark and kicked truly, and then five minutes later, Joel Smith goaled on the run for the Steaders to lead at half time by 21 points.

Talbot opened up with two goals in two minutes after the break to get to within nine points. Bond kicked his third goal from a snap shot and then Luke Kemp goaled on the run and the game was alive.

But Newstead fought back when once again Pollock tapped to the advantage of Smith who snapped an incredible goal on his left foot at the pavilion end to take a 21-point lead into the final term.

A goal each in the final term to Aiden McConachy for Newstead, and Bond for Talbot were the only majors scored for the term. Once again Pollock had a hand in the Newstead goal when once again he tapped it into the path of McConachy who snapped on his left foot.

Talbot continued to challenge but couldn’t break through the defensive structure of Newstead, holding on for a 14-point victory.

Smith was inspirational for Newstead as he was everywhere and continued to put the ball forward, others to play well for Newstead were James Mitchelhill, Harrison Harbrow, Bradley Richardson, Jovian Goulton, and Mitch Hough. While Pollock was not named in the best players, he kicked three goals and created another three goals using his experience to bring others into the play in the wet conditions.

Talbot’s better players were Matthew York, Jude McGuire, Darcy Osborne, Jayson Atkins, Bond and Matty Smith with Bond kicking four goals.
