Maryborough has earned three selections in the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL) interleague football squad, who will take on the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) in July.
Captain, and playing coach, Coby Perry has earned selection in the squad, as has defender Kya Lanfranchi and young gun Aidan Medlyn.
Perry has had an outstanding start to the season, despite the Magpies’ struggles on the field, and has collected 34.5 disposals per game, 7.5 clearances and almost five tackles per game, showing off his two-way game with aplomb as he continues to guide the young group.
Lanfranchi has battled manfully against the competition’s best forwards while playing as an undersized defender, and has proven to be one of the Magpies’ most reliable players since his ascension to the senior squad, while also balancing his commitments coaching the under 18s team.
Medlyn’s selection is part of a commitment by the BFNL to name a talented young player as part of the ‘Futures Squad’.
Medlyn earned selection as a development leader at the club this season, and, like Lanfranchi, has earned his stripes playing as a defender this season.
The ladder-leading Sandhurst lead the way with 12 selections in the squad, while Gisborne has 11 selections.
Dragons co-coach Ash Connick will also lead the squad, who will play the VAFA at Brighton’s Elsternwick Park on July 6.
Training will start in early June, with the initial training squad trimmed by late in the month, before a final 22-player team will be selected.
