PHIL HOOPER INSURANCE A GRADE CLUNES 9/275 v MARYBOROUGH yet to bat

Clunes navigated half-centuries from Jude McGuire, Mitch Coppick and Mark Allen to put up a formidable 275 on the first day’s play against Maryborough.

The Magpies batted first, and clearly enjoyed the idea of putting runs on the board, with McGuire and Brenton Jones combining well in the early stages of the day to make 91 runs for the first wicket.

But Lachie Condie was ready for a big day, and was able to make an impact to remove Jones for 41, catching him off his own bowling.

McGuire reached his second consecutive 50 and was looking to make a century, but he would be Maryborough’s second wicket, caught by Jasper Trickey off Condie’s bowling for 68.

Soon, Lachlan Morganti would go as well, with Marc Cassidy able to catch him off his own bowling for nine.

At 3/125, it was game on, but Coppick and Aidan Thompson, who was playing in his final game for Clunes, were determined to put some good runs on the board, and were able to combine for a 50-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Trickey would strike, with Thompson caught by Cassidy for 15.

Coppick and Allen would combine well to ensure Clunes passed 200 with ease, with Coppick reaching his fourth half-century of the season, while Allen broke through for his best performance with the bat so far.

Soon, Condie would strike again, with the young Owl enjoying a breakout performance.

He bowled Coppick for 64, before shortly after doing the same to Brendan Ingram for a duck.

Ben Hoban would take a wicket later on when he had Josh Thompson’s wicket for two, before he and Condie finished off the day.

Condie had a well-deserved five-wicket haul when Allen was caught by Cassidy for 56, and Hoban would have the final wicket of the day, with Daniel Leahy stumping Jaxon Smyth for eight.

Condie’s 5/25 stood out for Maryborough on a tough day, while Hoban took 2/55.
