The first front page of the Addy in May was an announcement that Avoca residents would soon be supplied with natural gas for their cooking and hot water needs. The confirmation came from then-Deputy Premier Peter Ryan and was met with applause, The Advertiser reported.
Then-Federal leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott cycled through Avoca, Talbot and Clunes as part of the charity ride Pollie Pedal, heading off from Adelaide and finishing in Geelong.
After a year’s absence, Maryborough’s historic fire tower returned to its former place of pride overlooking the town after being restored, initially removed due to safety concerns.
In sport, the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League’s football and netball interleague teams found huge success, beating their Picola and District Football Netball League opponents.

The Maryborough City Brass Band celebrated 100 years of musical history, with the whole community invited to join in with the celebrations. The band first started in 1903.
Avoca residents participated in a Bedathon to raise funds and awareness for the town’s new aged care facility. Locals Marg Pilgrim and Kevin Matthews spent 18 hours in hospital beds in Avoca’s main street, joined throughout the time by other volunteers from community groups, and raising $2230.
Local footballer Troy Chaplin was named best Australian player of a three -match series in Ireland.

1973
May in 1973 was largely filled by what would happen in the seat of Kara Kara (the electoral district Maryborough was then situated in, now Ripon) at the state election. At this time the seat was held by Labor, and it was eventually retained.
The Maryborough Apex Club honoured Les Diamond as the longest serving member — 22 years.
Netball was the talk of the town with some players participating in a street march to launch the 1973 local season.
