Maryborough Education Centre welcomed nine new graduate teachers, including local Kelsey Chandler, who started their careers during term one.

The Maryborough District Health Service opened its palliative care suite as part of the CancerCare project improving care for local patients.

Maryborough couple Peter Tate and Lynne Powers shared their experience fighting a bushfire which came within 750 metres of their holiday home in the Grampians — the fire burnt over 30,000 hectares

In sport, former Maryborough resident Jed Adcock was named co-caption of the Brisbane Lions in the AFL.

Leigh Argall and Kendall McFadyen were crowned the Maryborough District Tennis Association A grade champions at the wrap up of the local competition, while Golf Blue were the Saturday pennant premiers over Highland Tartan.

In cricket, it was a three-peat for Maryborough who were crowned premiers.

2003

March started with rumours circulating about the discovery of a 500 ounce (14 kg) gold nugget near Maryborough. Coiltek told The Advertiser at the time that the prospector who discovered the nugget was keeping well under the radar. However, there was some debate over the nugget’s existence from other local prospecting enthusiasts.

Dunolly’s Paul Harrington walked away from the television show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire with $64,000 in his pocket after successfully answering six questions.

The Maryborough Scout Group became one of the largest in the state, forming a second Scout Troop.

Maryborough Rotary Club announced it would be auctioning off surplus goods from the former Nestlé factory to raise funds for club projects.

Talbot Arts and Historical Museum secretary Bea Brewster was a recipient of one of 10 Victorian Senior Achiever Awards.

Maryborough Regional College student Troy Chaplin was selected to represent Australia in the Under 17 International Rules Football championships in Ireland come April.

1973

Much like today, back in 1973 there were concerns over staff shortages in specialised roles at the Maryborough Hospital — the private block had been closed since Christmas.

The Methodists Walkathon raised $300 for church projects, starting at the Carisbrook Methodist Church and ending at the Tullaroop Dam Picnic Reserve.

In sport, Gwen Gibbs was named the Maryborough District Ladies Bowling champion of champions after a stellar performance.

Sir Douglas Nicholls — Governor of South Australia, a pioneering campaigner for reconciliation, and the first Aboriginal Australian to be knighted among many other achievements — visited Maryborough and captivated audiences with a talk.
