Clunes residents Bruce and Dianne Hill packed up a wagon and set off with their team of Clydesdales to attend the 50th anniversary steam rally at Echuca.

The wayside stop and fountain along the Maryborough-Ballarat Road at the Goldfields Reservoir, described by a local councillor as an “embarrassment on a major entry to Maryborough”, was removed after a council vote.

The link between Maryborough, Victoria and the Maryborough in Queensland was celebrated with a ceremony following a 2100 kilometre cycling fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Australia between the two towns.

Maryborough Education Centre teacher Kelsey Chandler was recognised for her achievements at La Trobe University, nominated by the uni to receive an annual tertiary student award recognising those who’ve made an outstanding contribution to health, sport, recreation and other fields.

In sport, two MCDFNL players Matt Bilton (Carisbrook) and Mathew Giri (Harcourt) were selected in the Worksafe AFL Victoria Country training squad.

2003

By pure coincidence, a team of clydesdales also featured on the front page in 2003 — this time it was in Carisbrook where a 1920s restored wagon rolled into town, making its way from Maldon to Lexton. The wagon was restored in a joint venture between the State Government, Pyrenees Shire, Avoca Lions Club and the Lexton community.

The left turn only rule for vehicles exiting Woolworths onto Tuaggra Street was made permanent — and still exists today.

The Advertiser shared a fascinating article first published in September 1970 recounting the time John Farnham headlined Maryborough’s Golden Wattle Festival. The Addy of the day described how the crowd was so large that after the final song, John Farnham leapt from the stage and ran to a waiting car, hotly followed by hundreds of fans — one girl even managed to jump into the car before being dragged out.

50 YEARS AGO
1973

Maryborough’s first laundromat was on the way, set to be established by Lou Maffescioni between the Flagstaff Hotel and Phelans High Street store, expected to open in August.

Milk delivery was set to change — Maryborough Dairies announced it would be delivering all milk to homes, shops, industry and supermarkets in new ‘pure pak’ cartons due to the growing demand for cartoned milk.

After more than 100 years, the finishing touch was put on the blue stone Norman Tower — part of the Anglican Parish Church on Nightingale Street — with a four ton church spire added by crane.

Talks of amalgamating the Maryborough City Council and the Shire of Tullaroop began with then-councillor Brian O’Halloran saying it was becoming increasingly difficult to provide services and that if joined, both would be in a better position. A later edition of The Advertiser noted Tullaroop councillors did not find the proposal acceptable.

Renowned AFL footballer John Nicholls, along with a group of Carlton players, took part in a gala day at Princes Park arranged by the Maryborough League Football Club.
