2012

The Advertiser celebrated former Maryborough man David Cole who became the seventh Australian in history to climb the world’s seven summits — Mount Kosciuszko, Mount Everest, Mount Elbrus (Russia), Mount Denali (Alaska), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Vinson Massif (Antarctica), and finishing on Argentina’s Aconcagua.
Tragedy struck the community when the president and vice president of the Maryborough Aero Club — David Oxley and John Fisher — were killed when a Tiger Moth aircraft crashed at the local aerodrome.

20 YEARSAGO
2002
It was a big month for Avoca which was gearing up for the arrival of racing legend Peter Brock who was set to be the town’s Australia Day ambassador. Avoca also welcomed the first local bus service to Ballarat.
The Central Goldfields Shire Council announced it expected to receive a permit application for the construction of a local McDonalds.
Bealiba’s ‘unofficial mayor’ Bernard Rinaldi was named Central Goldfields Shire’s Citizen of the Year.

50 YEARS AGO
1972
The Advertiser reported on a power boat owned by Stuart Willox which caught fire while carrying four passengers and towing a skier at Cairn Curran Reservoir. Only one passenger suffered slight burns, and the boat was burned out.
Two locals, Jeanette Robertson and Sheryn Whittle, and a Talbot couple Mr and Mrs Ken Powell became trapped on a bus which stalled on a submerged bridge near Condamine, Queensland while travelling from Melbourne to Darwin. The accident occurred at 1am and passengers had to wade through five foot deep floodwaters in the dark to safety.
In the second week of January, The Advertiser of the day noted Australia was set to become the first country to make seat belt wearing compulsory throughout the country.
