The Maryborough Men’s Shed swung open its doors for the first time after a year of planning.

Carisbrook residents Fiona and Russell Bracken led their thoroughbred mare, Stylish Impression, to victory in the 2013 Best of Show Championship — a coveted award at the Royal Melbourne Horse Show.

The town rallied around major joinery factory Phelan and Sons after an inferno ripped through the building on February 23, with 15 fire brigades and many locals attending and supporting the firefighters.

Maryborough’s official rain gauge was “on the blink” during the previous month, showing 184 points — well below privately taken measures at around 280, which was a welcome relief for the town which was running dry at the time.

Ninety grade six students from schools in the Maryborough inspectorate were scheduled to head off on a five-day train tour of northern and central Victoria, with the program so popular 160 applied.

Maryborough Gun Club members Alf James and Graham Leech were selected for Victoria’s state team.
