2014

Ten years ago, the Maryborough Salvation Army marked 130 years in Maryborough. Officially opening on February 23, 1884, Maryborough was the 68th Corps opening in Australasia and adopted the name ‘The Victors’.

2014 marked 30 years of the Blue Light Disco in town, believed to be the longest running in Victoria.

In December this year Louise Staley became the Member for Ripon, ending a 15-year reign by Labor in the seat.

2004

Around 320 McPherson’s Printing Group employees stopped work and went on strike for fairer pay at the company’s Nelson Road and Sutton Road sites.

A number of oak trees in Phillips Gardens were deemed to be “beyond help”.

More than 40 local drivers flaunted drink driving laws 20 years ago, with many losing their license for three months and longer.

Border collie Lucy was the hero of the district, helping to save the life of Timor toddler Elly Egbers who almost drowned in a dam.

1974

The Victorian Government boosted funding for the care of mentally handicapped children by $1.8 million, with an additional $1 million allocated for five new day-training centres — including one in Maryborough.

Maryborough’s council staff commenced kerb and channel works with the help of a newly purchased, $7000 kerbmaker.

As 1974 neared closer to its end, preparations were in full swing for the 1975 Highland Gathering, with a crowd of 12,000 people expected to attend.
