Avoca has taken out the Maryborough District Tennis Association premiership, defeating Maryborough Green by 10 games in the season final last Saturday.

After being unable to attract numbers to run the competition last season, play was back on (albiet in a more social format) in 2022/23.

With their support contingent watching on, Trevor Field and Heath Beavis were fast out of the blocks in the opening set, racing to an early lead against Riley McLeish and Lyndon Tait.

The Green players were able to hit their way back into the game but were unable to edge in front, as Trevor’s all-court consistency led the Avoca pair to an 8-6 winning result.

The Avoca ladies, represented by Gina Beavis and Bethany Fitzpatrick, were more ruthless on their court, overwhelming Kate McLoughlin and Alisha Petersen 8-3 to give their team a handy early lead.

The Maryborough side bounced back in the first mixed set as Lyndon and Alisha defeated Heath and Bethany 8-2, but Trevor and Gina notched another 8-3 win on their court to ensure that any gains for the Green team were minimal.

Avoca entered the final two sets with a six-game lead, which the Maryborough players proved unable to rein in.

Trevor and Bethany proved too strong for Riley and Alisha for an 8-5 result, while Gina and Heath survived a tie-break against Lyndon and Kate to pad out the winning margin a little further, the final scores 42 to 32.

It was Avoca’s second consecutive premiership after taking the title in 2020-21, with there being no competition last season.
