Telstra is planning upgrades to its mobile base station in Newstead with the goal of bringing 5G mobile coverage to the town.

Infrastructure works will commence on Monday, April 29, meaning there will be no 3G/4G coverage from the site until the network is expected to be restored either on Saturday, May 4 or Sunday, May 5.

Telstra mobile customers will receive text messages advising them of the upcoming work and other Telstra services such as landlines and NBN internet will be uninterrupted by the works.

Once the upgrades are completed, Newstead wil join more than four hundred cities and towns across Australia with 5G connection.

Regional general manager Steve Tinker said the 5G rollout will provide more connectivity and less congestion for users.

“We are continuing to expand our 5G network across location and nationally we’re adding new sites to the network every week. Upgrades such as these continue to demonstrate Telstra’s ongoing commitment to regional Australia,” he said.

“There’s never a good time to undertake this sort of work but once its completed, it will mean better mobile services for local residents.

“As a company, we heavily invest in improving regional connectivity and this site is another example of our commitment.

“Over the past seven years to the end of the financial year of 2023, Telstra invested $11 billion in our mobile network nationally, with $4 billion of this invested in our regional mobile network.”

To improve connectivity while works are underway, residents are encouraged to activate wi-fi calling and businesses to connect any EFTPOS terminals to their internet connections.
