Highland Tartan have booked the first spot in the midweek grand final thanks to a comfortable victory over Dunolly Blue, while Talbot kept their season alive with a similar win over Avoca.

Highland Tartan controlled much of their contest against Dunolly Blue at Avoca and are now just one win away from avenging last year’s grand final loss thanks to a 64-52 win.

Greg Shay took a 21-12 win over Barry Mortlock, while Michael Fryar defeated Tony Galofaro 25-21. Dunolly Blue managed to take back two points thanks to Alan Weir’s 19-18 win over Andrew Brumby, but it was Highland Tartan that proved too good.

Talbot’s 69-57 victory was in essence similar to the two teams’ meeting in the Saturday pennant just days earlier.

Daniel Giddings was able to take two points for Avoca with a 21-19 win over Robert Jackson, but it was Talbot’s day, with Matthew Vernon taking a 22-16 win over Loralee Field and Barb Crossley winning 28-20 over Noel Parratt.

It means that Dunolly Blue and Talbot will now meet for the right to face off against Highland Tartan in the two teams’ first meeting since mid-November.

On that occasion, Dunolly Blue was victorious, but by three shots, indicating that this preliminary final could be one which is decided on the final shot on Tuesday.

Their 65-62 success was achieved in a game where no rink was decided by more than four shots, with Keith Elliott and Weir defeating Robert Jackson and Ray Prentice respectively, 20-19 and 26-22, while Peter McLaughlan gave Talbot two points with a 21-19 win over Galofaro.

The round 18 clash two weeks ago looked set to decide the second spot for the double chance, but due to Victoria’s hot weather and severe storms that hit, the game was unplayed.
