A top-four thriller has allowed Highland Tartan to skip away on top of the ladder at the season’s midway point.

Not much separated Talbot and Dunolly Blue, and it was the latter who was able to leapfrog into second courtesy of a 65-62 win.

Keith Elliott took victory over Robert Jackson by the barest of margins, 20-19, while Alan Weir helped extend their advantage courtesy of a 26-22 win over Ray Prentice. While Peter McLaughlan clawed back some ground with a 21-19 win over Tony Galofaro, it wasn’t enough to win the game.

Coupled with Highland Tartan’s dominant 83-41 win over Dunolly Gold, it means the margin between the ladder leading Tartan and Dunolly Blue now sits at 28 points.

Highland Tartan were far too strong in all aspects against Dunolly Gold, who continued to give their all.

Greg Shay defeated Wayne Stephens 25-15, while Andrew Brumby defeated Frank Mifsud 28-10. Leanne Wallis’ 30-16 win over Jim Haigh finished off a strong morning’s work for the competition powerhouse.

Avoca have breathed new life into the top four race, closing the gap to just four points behind Maryborough Golf after a 53-49 win.

Noel Parratt defeated Liz Bucknall 17-16, but it was Rebecca Zeuschner’s 24-10 win over Marian Webb which gave Avoca enough of a gap to defend, even despite Ann Loosmore’s defeat to Kort Gay, 23-12.

Highland Gold are also back in the finals picture courtesy of a 79-45 win over Newstead.

Michael Fryar was too strong for Brian Daly, winning 24-15, while Jason Arthur had a comfortable 37-12 win over Graeme Lipback. Newstead took one competition point, with Corry Moss and Mark Leckey unable to be split at 18-apiece.

Round 10 starts the second half of the season, with Highland Tartan travelling to Avoca as they look to continue their unbeaten run.

An important game between fourth-placed Maryborough Golf and sixth-placed Highland Gold could have ideal consequences for the winner, with a spot in the top four potentially up for grabs.

Dunolly Blue will be looking to keep the pressure on Highland Tartan as the reigning premiers face up against stablemates Dunolly Gold.

Carisbrook and Newstead will both look to clear out from the bottom of the ladder when the two teams meet at Carisbrook.

Talbot will have the bye.
