The colourful talent of Talbot Primary School students is on full show, with a student-based exhibition officially opening last week at Dovecote Gallery.

The school was approached by the Talbot Art Group about displaying student artworks, and the group’s Fran Tulk said she was impressed with the quality of work the students produced for the exhibition and the care of the students’ art teacher Kate Lee.

“I’m an ex teacher, and as a granny now I have a bigger interest in fostering the arts at schools,” she said.

“I wanted to show the kids that art isn’t just painting — we have a local farmer who sculpts, we had a lady who used to bring her quilting to the art group.

“The quality of the works are fabulous. Kate’s obviously a good art teacher — she’s got the kids thinking outside the box utilising things like stencils, layering and imagination. These are skills a lot of us take years to pick up, because we weren’t taught these when we were at school.

“Come on up and have a look, these kids are talented.”

The students, along with friends and family held a jam-packed opening night last Wednesday where they viewed the works in the space for the first time, which are a mix of mediums including utilising paint, stencils, layered works and string art.

Teacher Ms Lee said works from Foundation right through to grade six are on display.

“We were able to choose some pieces the students had already completed during the year, but then also work on some new pieces to help bring it all together. There’s a piece of work from everyone,” she said.

“We had a really great turn out at the opening, which is reflective of the fact that people do appreciate the opportunity to see what their child has made, and it promotes art as being an important way to learn, because we do have a lot of students who do artwork at home as well.

“There are more abstract pieces and more precise pieces which is reflective of the age.”

The art group framed the works which was kept as a surprise until opening night, and grade six student Kajari said she was excited to see her pieces on the wall, attending the opening with her mum and brother.

“Our art fits in here. The room it’s in doesn’t look a lot different from the other stuff in the gallery. It looks like it belongs with the other art-work,” she said.

“It makes it look more professional with the frames. It was pretty cool.

“I like the style, we haven’t done anything like that. I have done line art before but not in the same style as this.”

The exhibition will be on for several weeks. The Dovecote Gallery, located on the second floor of London House with entry via Fyffe Street, will be open 11 am to 4 pm Saturdays and 9 am to 3 pm Sundays.
