Talbot mark Anzac Day
Anzac Day and community were one and the same in Talbot on Friday.
Community was at the heart of Talbot’s Anzac Day service on Friday, as over 100 residents gathered to pay their respects.
It was the opportune moment for Talbot’s mid-morning service at 9 am Friday, where locals came together before the rain started to fall.
The service began with a march to the Talbot Soldiers Memorial Plot that included local veterans, the families of veterans, school students and members of the Talbot Fire Brigade.
Following the march, a brief service was held with guest speakers including local councillor Ben Green and Member for Ripon Martha Haylett. A number of wreaths were also laid.
Looking at the crowd that turned out on the day, Talbot RSL sub branch vice president Jim Dewar said it speaks to the strength of Talbot’s community.
“We involve the local fire brigade as well as school students which I think is important, it brings the community together, particularly the younger people in Talbot,” he said.
“Looking at the crowd this year, I think it’s probably one of the best turnouts we’ve had in recent memory and we’re growing year to year which is really good.
“I think it’s the community realising what has gone before them and what their forefathers have been through, it’s touching.”
Mr Dewar, a veteran of the Vietnam War himself, said Anzac Day holds a special place close to his heart for many reasons.
“I know my dad fought in the Second World War in New Guinea and he’d be proud of today,” he said on Friday.
“Seeing the community come together to recognise the day is most important to me too, community is at the heart of it.”
