Five second-quarter goals were the key for Natte Bealiba to move back into the top four, taking a 46-point victory over Talbot.
It was a performance that was headlined by the incredible performance of Jye Mortlock, who went berzerk in the second quarter on his way to a five-goal haul.
However, in the early stages, it was a struggle to get the score on the board, as defence ruled the day. Both teams were only able to find the goals once in the opening term, with Talbot taking a narrow one-point lead going into the first break.
The Hawks had a couple of opportunities to add to their lead, but it wasn’t to be.
Instead, the Swans showed that they do not let teams off the hook for missing chances, and through Mortlock, who dominated proceedings in the second quarter, kicking multiple goals, the Swans were able to clear out and take a 31-point lead going into the main break.
That was all the ammunition the Swans needed going into the second half, with the game reverting back to a struggle in the third quarter. Just one goal was scored, going the Swans’ way, while the Hawks could only add two behinds.
Sitting 38 points up, the Swans finished the game strongly, kicking two goals from six scoring shots, while the Hawks were able to add their second goal of the day to put a touch more respectability on the scoreboard.
While Mortlock’s showstopping five-goal haul was key to the Swans’ victory, it also could not have been possible without the work of Bailey Cossar, Jordan Fraser, Jayden Templeton, Tom Broadbent and Brady Templeton.
The Hawks fought hard for much of the day, but they were just unable to take their opportunities, with Jude McGuire, Trent Severino, Noah Davies, Matthew Bond, Trent Barras and Nathan Bond named in their best.
