A devastating second-quarter burst gave Natte Bealiba all the ammunition they needed in the battle for a top-four place with Newstead, eventually winning by 55 points.
The first quarter was a beauty, with seven goals kicked between the two teams, but it was the Swans who assumed the ascendancy at the first break, leading by eight points.
But it was all Natte in the second quarter as they started to control the game, kicking seven goals while holding the Kangaroos to one to effectively end the contest at half time, sitting 45 points up.
To their credit, Newstead kept fighting the entire afternoon, and were rewarded with a great third quarter, which yielded five goals to the Swans’ three. It was enough to see them reduce the margin to 34 points at the last break.
Any hope of a miraculous revival was snuffed out by the Swans, however, who kicked four goals to one in the last quarter to eventually run out comfortable winners.
Will Holt did all the damage for the Swans, kicking seven goals in a best-on-ground display, ably supported by Austin McKenzie, Zac Mortlock, Aaron Hayes, Joshua Grant and Kurt Mortlock. Jye Mortlock, with three goals, was another solid contributor.
Newstead were well-served by Mitch Hough, Joel Smith, Angus Mayes, Rhys Smith, Anthony Robins and Brendan McDougall, with Tyler James continuing his remarkably consistent season with four goals.
